Wow! What a packed three weeks it has been since we returned from break. We have had a lot of changes in our schedule, but the students handled them well! Enjoy some photos from the last two weeks! News and Notes Jan. 5, 2018
Happy New Year Room 37 families! I hope you all enjoyed this extra day of relaxation :) This week in Writer’s Workshop we wrote about something we did over the vacation. We focused on only one special event or activity and practiced expanding our writing by including lots of details. Ask your child to share what they wrote about! During Reader’s Workshop we talked about being the boss of our own reading! We learned that good readers stop at the first sign of trouble when they are reading. Good readers try everything they can to get the job done! We practiced making sure the words look right, sound right, and make sense. Ask your child if they remember our “Be a Reading Boss” song! (To the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It) In math and number corner we focused on word problems and equations with missing parts (ex. ? + 5 = 7). We focused on showing our work in three ways: a circle drawing, a math box or number bond, and an equation. We also practiced using number lines to count by 10s and count by 5s. The sight words we practiced this week were: day, because, if, this, where, will. Students need to know how to read and write these words! We also started a new choice menu for our word work practice! During team time, we worked with our table teams to make the longest paper chain we could using only a glue stick and two pieces of construction paper. Table 2 built the longest paper train! We had a lot of fun! I apologize for the lack of pictures, I had forgotten my phone this day. Reminders: This Friday, 1/12 is an Early Dismissal Day. Dismissal will be at 12:30, and children should bring a lunch from home unless they buy lunch at school every day. Please keep in mind that the only choices for hot lunch are the sandwich of the week or a bagel. We will not have school on Monday 1/15 due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. All students will have a chance to see the school play during the day next Thursday 1/18. You only need to buy tickets if you want to go at night with your whole family. It is very cold at recess! Please make sure your child is prepared with a warm coat, snow pants, waterproof gloves, a warm hat, and boots! Students must leave their boots in the hallway and have a pair of indoor shoes to wear in the classroom to avoid wet floors. Thank you! |
