I am positive that Room 37 students were the MOST focused classroom in all of Orchard on this week before break. I am SO proud of them! I will certainly miss them over the next week. Enjoy your holiday break- I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving with friends and family! Some highlights from our week: Farm to School Class Reward! (We had lunch in the classroom) Building instruments out of shoe boxes and rubberbands I apologize for not sending home a newsletter this week- busy week! Please see the electronic copy below. Thanks!
News and Notes Nov. 17, 2017 This week in Writing Workshop we finished our non-fiction piece about Spiders. We made sure to include the important elements of non-fiction writing: a title, a “what’s it all about?” sentence (topic sentence or main idea), headings, important facts/ideas, a “tie-up” (closing sentence), a diagram, and a glossary. During Reading Workshop we focused on making sense of what we read. We talked about how sometimes you have to reread to make sure that an unknown word you had to sound out makes sense in the sentence. If not, then you have to look at the word again because reading has to make sense! Remember…children should be reading at home EVERY night- feel free to supplement your child’s book in a bag reading with read aloud books and any other books from home that spark a love of reading! In math we continued our practice with doubles facts (and the corresponding subtraction equations: 5+5=10 10-5=5, etc.) and doubles plus one, so that we know these facts automatically without counting on our fingers!! The sight words we practiced this week are: look, come, play, not, am, by Children need to know how to read and spell these words. On Friday we made musical instruments out of shoeboxes and rubber bands, so we could investigate sound. We learned about vibrations, low sounds and high sounds, and sound waves. Then we formed a band and made some music! Make sure you check out the pictures of the students hard at work creating their instruments on the blog! We had a Farm to School lesson this week. We learned about food waste and prepared roasted carrots and beets. Reminders: There is no school next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. If you forgot to send your child’s Reading Workshop books back to school today, please make sure you send them in on the Monday we return to school!! I have really enjoyed conferencing with all of you to discuss your child’s progress. You should all be so proud- I have seen such tremendous growth in only three short months! The Book Fair continues next Monday and Tuesday in the library. I hope all of you get a chance to visit the fair with your children and purchase some great new books! This is a big fundraiser for us, as nearly half of the proceeds go directly to the school. As the weather gets colder, please remember to send your child with the appropriate clothing (warm jacket, mittens, hat, snowpants) and shoes/boots he/she will need for recess. The children go out to recess EVERY day unless the temperature drops below zero. Please make sure you LABEL all articles of clothing. Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! |
